πŸ” Quantum-safe encryption standards have arrived

This week, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) unveiled groundbreaking cryptography standards designed to withstand the looming threat of quantum computing β€” and this development is more than just a technical footnote β€” it's a call to action.

Why?

Because the encryption methods we rely on today are becoming obsolete in the face of quantum computing power.

NIST's previous cryptography standards, developed in the 1970s, are used in almost all devices, including Internet routers, phones, and laptops β€” and that's a problem. Imagine a world where all of our current digital locks can be picked in the blink of an eye. That's the potential reality quantum computers bring to the table.

But it's not just about future threats. "Harvest now, decrypt later" attacks are a present danger, with malicious actors already collecting encrypted data today, waiting patiently for quantum computers to crack it open.

NIST mathematician Dustin Moody, who leads the post-quantum cryptography standardization project, emphasizes the urgency in taking action:

"These finalized standards include instructions for incorporating them into products and encryption systems. We encourage system administrators to start integrating them into their systems immediately, because full integration will take time."

πŸ’¬ Canadian business leaders explore the quantum frontier at landmark roundtable

In late May of this year, QIC came together with Canada's National Quantum Strategy (NQS) Secretariat and Canadian Chamber of Commerce to host a landmark virtual roundtable with a cross-section of Canadian Chamber members to introduce quantum technologies to forward-thinking business leaders nationwide.

Facilitated by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the event featured presentations from QIC, the NQS Secretariat, Distriq, the Quantum Innovation Zone of Sherbrooke, and Quantacet.

The roundtable illuminated the expansive potential of quantum applications across industries, the unique opportunity Canadian businesses have to lead in this technological revolution, and concrete next steps business leaders' can take to advance their quantum journeys.
